It can be a daunting task to find a domain name that is short, memorable, and easy to pronounce – which someone else hasn’t already registered. Some years ago, while engaged in that pursuit, I stumbled upon a name which was available: iumbic. Of course, it’s an entirely a made-up word that I pronounce like eye-yum-bick.
People I respect have nicely informed me that this is a silly word, and not worthy of being associated with any respectable endeavor. So in the course of time, I tried to offer it for sale at some of those boutique domain name resellers. After all, I like the name. Wouldn’t others? Two of those resellers declined to list iumbic.com in their stores, kindly observing that it didn’t fit the standards they were searching for in their establishments.
That left me with a domain name I like and a project that has been percolating for quite some time to write and publish thoughts I have about life. Sensibly or not, I have merged the two and will use iumbic as the name of this publishing company.
So what does iumbic mean?
The best I can do is offer the associations with existing words that it brings to mind for me. There isn’t any actual etymological connection to any existing word, as far as I can see. It is similar to the word iambic which is used to describe a metric rhythm in poetry. For me, iumbic conveys a sense of lyric, fluid poetry.
The word iumbic calls to my mind triumphant with its winning against difficulty, strain, and adversity. In the background there is a wrestling with the trouble of life, but in the foreground there is overcoming and enduring and success.
A final association is with the word recumbent in the sense of reclining, relaxed, having life managed and in control. Perhaps this expresses some tension with triumphant, but there is a richness in this concept which bridges that gap.
Picture a person standing high in the mountains at the top of a rocky outcropping: arms outstretched and fingers splayed as if to hug the whole scene and own it. That’s iumbic.
Picture a person in a hammock in the shade on a mild summer’s afternoon with some lemonade and a magazine. That’s iumbic.
Picture a person in a lab or an office working through a thorny problem that has just melted away in a flash of insight. That’s iumbic.
Hear the music playing in the background at any of those scenes. That’s iumbic.
So, iumbic is an adjective that describes having a triumphant, poetic, recumbent joy that is satisfied and calm.
The tagline says that the publications of this site are pursuing wisdom for today from the Ancient of Days, that is, God our creator. This is not a definition of iumbic but is instead the surest way to become iumbic in our personal lives. The Lord knows perfectly how life works and has the power and grace to make godliness a reality for us. He can provide discernment as to how to think rightly about personal and relationship issues that plague us. God has given us clear instruction in the Bible for the choices we need to make.
Feel free to hang around, send notes, and read my books and newsletter. I’ll do my best to share insights into life and the Scripture, and hopefully you will find those helpful and encouraging.
Also understand that we aren’t trying to hold any copyright on the use of the word iumbic. Adopt the word and use it however you like. Just remember that it’s also the name of this publisher and come back to check us out from time to time.
God’s way out. We are in more trouble than we think, but we have more hope than we realize.
